I am part of a writer’s group here in my hometown of Ottertail, Minnesota. For those writers who aren’t a part of a group like this, I recommend finding one in your area. It is a great way to get some helpful feedback on your work and find like-minded creative people who are as excited about the craft as you are. Each week we are assigned a spontaneous writing prompt which we work to complete within a 10 minute period. Sometimes these end in utter disaster and sometimes I am surprised by what I have accomplished.
This past week we were assigned the topic, “what activities cause me to lose track of time?”. This is what I came up with.
Getting swept away in stimulating conversation late at night when all you have before you is a sheet of dark scattered with sparkling diamonds and words about God and life and love.
Feeling the penetrating light of love pierce my heart as I marvel at the beauty of Jesus, listening for his echoes which vibrate through my previously callous heart. The ache of tenderness as it overwhelms me scattering my inhibitions in a locked, secret room.
Fingers fumbling at white keys, producing a cry of longing. Rippling through my vocal chords, emanating sweet surrender and mystical sounds emptying in transforming waves causing stillness to break in and peace to consume.
Words spill into magical tales coursing from a mind given to the ease of imagination. Characters created by fire and heartache and love portraying the dreams in my heart yet to be awakened. Breaking down walls, burrowing pathways of hope to cross through.
Now as you can see, this isn’t a piece of writing with epic proportions but merely an exercise to get your creative juices flowing. You may not use the actual piece that you’ve written in a writing prompt but it might stir an idea or you may take a piece of what you have written and use it in some other material.
