I work at a law office in New York Mills, Minnesota, a town with a population of about 1,200 people. On my lunch break today, I wandered into a small-town diner called Eagles Cafe. I was met by a tired-looking waitress. “Do we seat ourselves?” I asked politely. She gave me a look like I was the dumbest person alive. “Well, I don’t know. Do you have a reservation?” She then proceeded to scowl at me some more.
I responded with walking to a nearby table and seating myself. Wow.
